Surman ama follemente il contrasto ed è un vero genio della frastagliatura, della frase «avvitata», della «carotizzazione» del suono. Come pochi altri suoi contemporanei è capace di analizzare quella che molti chiamano la «perfezione sonora». Fondamentalmente è un solitario che, dopo aver cavalcato molte praterie del rinnovamento jazzistico, accentua la sua parte virtuosistica.
